The Miracle paintings continue an investigation that has been central to Colen's practice from the outset: to what extent does art come from the artist, and to what extent does it arise from forces independent of the artist? In his earliest paintings, Colen labored over precise oil renderings of banal interiors—a sloppy apartment bathroom, an adolescent bedroom, a camping tent—into which he introduced the presence of the supernatural— the Blue Fairy, Jesus Christ, twinkling cherubs, his deceased grandfather. He describes the subsequent series of Candle paintings as “portraits of God.” In these works, the space of the canvas contains the space of Geppetto's worktable—where Pinocchio transcends his materiality to become real—and a message appears in the smoke left by a just-extinguished candle flame.

The artists featured in Enigmatic Realms are able to apply their keen observational skills and sensitivity in order to create images which reflect a world recognizable to each viewer, yet tinted by the artists’ unique vision and interpretation. The pieces are gracefully persuasive, presenting the audience with something original and appealing on a number of levels.

sepiaEYE is pleased to present Rectangular Squares, a group exhibition featuring the work of sixteen artists whose photographic images conjure suggestion out of structure, semblance out of geometry.
Photography, despite its seemingly tenacious bond to descriptive reality, is in essence a fiction, a visual improvisation both generated and made tangible by the very borders that define it: the rectangle or the square.

From emerging artist Suzy Kellems Dominik, Beatrice – To Hell And Back is the second work in a trio of riveting installations deconstructing male-female interaction and human sentiment.
Inspired by the masterpieces of Italian poet Dante Alighieri, Beatrice is an emotional autobiography that tells a tale of audacious love. Six otherworldly images accompany a 9-foot-tall sculptural centerpiece representing the physical manifestation of Hell and Beatrice’s rise to freedom. The multi-sensory experience is heightened by a layered soundtrack that leads viewers through Beatrice’s struggle of psyches and eventual triumph, while a custom aroma and the timeless words of Dante become increasingly prevalent throughout.

This group exhibition examines the extension of self through otherness. We are impacted by many elements - dreams, environments, experiences, the living and the non-living, which condition our perceptions.
